Computers in Education: Friend or Foe?

An 8 page review of the literature for answers to the question of how appropriate computers are in the educational environment. The author reviews four specific articles from online technology journals. The conclusion is reached that computers can be tremendously powerful tools both in terms of student output and learning and also in terms of teacher output and learning. Through computers students have access to materials at the speed of light. They can incorporate new information, make changes and revisions, and produce considerably more high quality reports and projects in much less time than that which would be involved utilizing more traditional resources. At the same time, however, we must recognize the importance of using computers as a supplemental educational tool as opposed to a primary one. We must also recognize the importance of carefully selecting this tool, its accessories, and the environment with which it will work. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Creating an Online Community College Course for High School Students

This 7 page report discusses a case study in which a community college wants to create a course for high school seniors in a particular region outlining what students should expect regarding a college education. With an effective Internet presence, the college believes it can help these students understand the challenges of college, how to meet those challenges, and, hopefully, choose their institution as the place to begin their college career. However, marketing the community college is very much secondary to exposing students to topics such as how to choose classes, how to budget both time and finances, and choosing a major. Critical Thinking And Intellectuals In Contemporary Society

In Plato's Allegory of the Cave, the author advocates the presence of philosopher-kings; in fact, he claims public service is the duty of those who have (metaphorically) ascended to the sunlight, admonishing those intellectuals of his time not to turn their backs upon those who still reside within the darkness, inasmuch as their responsibility is to teach and to lead. The type of critical thinking Shaw describes clearly corresponds to Plato's Allegory, which is to get back to the very basics of human interaction. The role that critical thinking plays within contemporary American society is one that is quickly dwindling in social importance; indeed, the role it should play is one that is as integral to human survival as breathing is. In American popular culture today, the past thirty years has demonstrated an anti-intellectual tendency that appeared to have reached its peak approximately ten to fifteen years ago. When one considers the reason(s) for this drastic change and the impact anti-intellectualism has had upon government and public institutions, one can easily surmise that technology has played a significant role. Curriculum Development and Internet Technology

Concepts that are being utilized on contemporary college campuses incorporate a combination of distance learning, Internet access, video conferencing, mass media, knowledge-based systems and interactive multimedia. Without question, the student of today has a far greater array of learning tools than his counterpart of twenty years ago. The primary benefit from these technological applications is that they remove stagnating boundaries that have always existed with regard to exploring further educational horizons.
