In his novel, Joyce presents a coming-of-age narrative in which the evolution and alienation of his protagonist, Stephen Dedalus, a young man very much like Joyce himself, demonstrates various aspects of Victorian Irish society, but particularly, it shows Stephen's increasing alienation towards organized religion.
